The Company
- Isegen South Africa (Pty) Ltd is the sole manufacturer of Food
Acidulants, Phthalic and Maleic Anhydrides (PA
and MA), and Plasticisers in South
Africa.
- The Isegen South Africa operations extend over three manufacturing
sites. These are at Isipingo and Umgeni – both situated
in Durban and the third at Germiston near Johannesburg.
- The Head Office is established at the Isipingo site which is conveniently
situated next to the Durban International Airport and South Durban
petrochemical complex. It is close to the Durban export harbour,
which is the largest in Africa.
Food Acids
- Isegen South Africa has a long history in the manufacture and marketing
of Food Acids dating back to 1974.
- The Food Acid plant uses in-house MA which is derived from Butane supplied by the refinery situated next door to produce Malic Acid and Fumaric Acid and is now the most integrated Food Acids manufacturer anywhere in the world.
- This enables the company to benefit from many synergies from being
on the same site as the MA plant, such as the use of steam generated
from the exothermic oxidation reaction of MA, to drive the Food Acidulants
plant. In addition, steam is also supplied by the PA plant.
- A range of Food Acidulants is manufactured, most of which have unique
characteristics or properties.
- Isegen is the only company known world-wide to have perfected the granulation
of these acidulants.
- Some of these products have been patented and trademarked around
the world.
Furthermore the logistical advantage from the backward integration to
the MA supply and to the butane that is available from the refinery next-door
enables ISEGEN to make best use of the integrated supply chain from "buying
butane and selling food acids".
